The People of Hafnarfjordur - photos by Arni Gunnlaugsson
The People of Hafnarfjordur - Photos of older residents of Hafnarfjordur by Árni Gunnlaugsson
Árni Gunnlaugsson supreme court attorney was born in Hafnarfjordur 11th of March 1927. He has been very active in taking pictures of the people of Hafnarfjordur but it was about 50 years ago when he started to have genuine interest in taking photos of the older people strolling around the town especially of the people that were born or had lived in Hafnarfjordur for a long time. Árni was inspired by photos taken by Gunnar Rúnar in 1940-50s as they can be seen in two books by the tutor Magnús Jónsson.
The photos at the exhibition are around 400 of 500 residents in Hafnarfjordur, which were taken over the period of 1960-92 and are all black and white. The photos are from a collection of 612 photos from three books by Árni, the People from the Fjord (Fólkið í Firðinum), where one can find many details about the people on the photos, the houses as well as other things that are depicted. In the autumn of 1979 Árni held an exhibition from the first two books at the Good Templars house. Last year he showed the photos from his third book at Hrafnista.
