Dr. Sverrir Magnússon and his wife Dr. Ingibjörg Sigurjónsdóttir laid the foundation for Hafnarborg, donating their considerable collection of art and their house in the centre of Hafnarfjörður back in 1983. The museum was formally opened in May 1988 and the collection has grown considerably since then, both through purchases made and through gifts from artists and collectors. Some of the art works on display are from the original collection which include a lot of paintings by a local artist Eiríkur Smith as well as prints by Elías B. Halldórsson and Gunnar Hjaltason also local artists.

Hafnarfjordur celebrate its towns 100 years anniversary in 2008 and Hafnarborg, Hafnarfjordur Centre of Culture and Fine Art celebrates its 25 years anniversary.
