Wavelenghts - Creighton Michael

An exhibition of sculptures and etchings by the American artist Creighton Michael will open at Hafnarborg on Saturday 26th of July at 3 pm and is open to 25th of August 2008

Two exhibitions will open with Creighton Michael’s art works in Iceland, the first one in Hafnarborg 26th of July and the latter one in Start Art in Reykjavik 31st of July.

In all Creighton Michael’s work, drawing is emphatically primary.  He works in paint, print and drawing on paper, as well as sculptural drawing with the same components.  Following Michael’s 2004 trip to Iceland, the nation’s geological and cultural individuality have played into his visual investigations, both as muse and matchless setting within which to view the work.  This exhibition will show many of these Iceland inspired works.
Creighton Michael received his M.A. in art history from Vanderbilt University and a M.F.A. in painting and multimedia from Washington University in St. Louis. He is a recipient of a Pollack Krasner Foundation grant, a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship in sculpture and a Golden Foundation for the Arts award in painting. His work is in various public and private collections including of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., Brooklyn Museum, High Museum of Art, Atlanta Georgia, Denver Art Museum, Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, North Carolina, the Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase, New York, The John and Maxine Belger Family Foundation, Kansas City, Missouri and Progressive Corporation in Cleveland Ohio.
Michael has had solo exhibitions at the High Museum of Art; Katonah Museum of Art, Katonah, New York; Vanderbilt University; the Queens Museum of Art at Bulova Corporate Center; Neuberger Museum of Art; University of Richmond Museums, Richmond, Virginia; The Mint Museum, as well as numerous galleries in New York City and throughout the United States. Abroad he has had solo exhibitions in Copenhagen and Montreal. In 2008 solo exhibitions are scheduled at The Belger Arts Center, Kansas City, Misssouri, Lesley Heller Gallery, New York City, Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, Wilmington, Delaware, the Hafnarfjörður Institute of Culture and Fine Arts, Iceland and The Baker Center for the Arts, Muhlenberg College, Allentown, Pennsylvania.
He has been on the faculty at Rhode Island School of Design and the Pennsylvania Academy of Art, a visiting lecturer at Princeton University and a visiting artist at numerous colleges and universities including Albright College, Marshall University, Haverford College, Purchase College and University of Richmond. Michael has conducted studio workshops at Anderson Ranch Art Center, The Arts Center in St. Petersburg, Florida and Virginia Commonwealth University to mention a few. He has been a Visiting Professor of Art at Hunter College in New York City since 2005.
